News!

August 8, 2008

Where does the time go? I can't believe I haven't updated this since April. Oh well, I guess I have been busy.

In May I became grandma to grand-daughter #2. Ben and Jackie had another little girl, Irelynn. She is just growing like a weed. We went and visited for a week after she was born and then they all came to visit here for two weeks. It was hard to see Payge and Irelynn go, but they keep us posted with phone calls and photos.

June was very good to me and my quilting life. I entered two quilts at the Black Hills Guild show in Rapid City, SD. I won two first place ribbons and the judges choice award. The quilts were my Citrus Slices Quilt which won the Judge's Choice and Fluer et Oies was the other one I entered. For the first time ever I entered quilts in the NQA show held in Ohio. I was thrilled to win ribbons on two of the three quilts I entered. I got a third place ribbon in the Appliqued Bed Quilts for my Heartland Album and a second place ribbon for my Indian Orange Peel in the pieced wall quilt division. It was also chosen to be considered for the Excellence in Piecing award. At the Minnesota Quilters Guild show I won first place for High Gear in the non-traditional wall-hanging category and Judge's Choice for my Jacobean Pineapple Star quilt. My husband, sister and her boyfriend made the trip to Rochester, MN for the show and had a really fun weekend.

I also traveled to Brookings, SD to teach a weekend workshop for my Circling Geese pattern. I had 20 gals on Friday and 17 others on Sat. My trunk show was attended by around 80 ladies. I had a great time and I think my students enjoyed themselves also.

I also taught a 2 day class on Judy Martin's Log Cabin Quilts for my guild in Watford City, ND. As always we had an enjoyable event! Some great log cabin quilts were started in class that I can't wait to see finished.

I had two graduation quilts to complete this year for my nieces that graduated. Right now I am working on a baby quilt for another niece and my baby sister's wedding quilt. Colleen is getting married Oct. 25th. I am the oldest and she is the youngest in my family. There are 26 years seperating us so when I say baby sister, I mean baby sister!

I am also busy working on project for my fall classes. First is the Indian Summer Quilt Show and conference in Fargo, then the Badlands retreat in Medora and finally the Capital Quiltfest in Bismarck. Plus lots of local classes going on. So it looks like things are not slowing done any time soon.

Happy Quilting,

Kathy

April 26, 2008

Well, I took the plunge and went to the International Quilt Show in Chicago to visit my quilt! 22 hours on the train one way was an adventure, but I met some really interesting people along the way.

The quilt show was marvelous of course. So many quilts to admire and so many vendors to visit. My suitcase was definetly heavier coming home that when I went! I bought some wonderful hand-dyed fabrics to start a Ricky Tims Rhapsody quilt. Who knows when I will have the time, but at least it is there when I want to start on it!

The 2009 AQS Quilt Art Engagement Calendars are out and my quilt High Gear is there for the week of Oct. 19th.

I have been very busy this last month traveling and teaching. I was gone the last 5 weekends. I am ready to stay home for a while. Now I need to start getting ready to do family travel with 2 nieces graduating in May and a new Grand-daughter due the 28th. So maybe my life won't be slowing down a little bit after all!

I finally took some time this past week and got two new patterns written up and printed. My Stacked Circles and Moonlight Leaves Patterns are now ready and available at The Bent Pin in Williston, ND or by contacting me.

I have sent in my photos to see if any of my quilts will be accepted into the Minnesota show. I printed off a few entry forms from other shows, thinking I need to get more active in entering show farther afield. The only problem with that is that you need to be organized and get things sent by deadlines! The entry form for the Rapid City show is filled out and ready to mail also, so hopefully my quilts will be traveling this summer.

Take care and take time to quilt!

Kathy

Where does the time go? Here it is Feb. already and a month of 2008 has gone by in a flash!

I am busy as usual teaching and trying to finish up some of my personal projects. I have at least two I am trying to finish up for the Minot show the end of March. www.minotquilters.com

I have been really enjoying Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims site www.thequiltshow.com In fact I started a member blog on the site a few days ago. If you are interested in checking it out you can click on the following address.

If you haven't checked out this site it is really fun. Every two weeks there is a new web show from Ricky and Alex with wonderful guests, tips and ideas. There is also fun stuff, like chatting, blogging, quilt gallery, video classes and a new Block of The Month.

I hope the new year brings lots of quilting time for everyone!

Oct. 29, 2007

It has been a busy and exciting fall for me. I have been teaching on the road a lot and having a great time. At the Indian Summer Quilt Show and Conference in Fargo I taught full classes for my Circling Geese and French Braid classes. I won several ribbons at the quilt show including a first place for High Gear in the Original Design catagory, the Excellence in Applique award for my Garden Sampler sponsored by Prairie Rose Quilt Shop of Minot, ND and the Design and Workmanship award sponsored by J&R Sewing Centers for Circling South.

We had a great time at the Badlands Retreat in Dickinson, ND. I took Susan Cleveland's Piping Hot Binding class and am now an official "piping hottie"! Friday night was another fun evening with my Mystery Class. It was wonderful to see Sharon Malec's inspiring work at her lecture. Of course our T-shirts say "What Happens at Retreat Stays at Retreat" so there are lots of things I don't dare tell you about! LOL

I had a wonderful trip to Mayville, ND to teach for Faye's Henhouse Quilts. I taught Free-Form Curves from Louisa Smith's book A New Twist on Strips and Curves and a machine quilting class. Mayville has a great quilter's retreat house that I stayed in with several of my students. It was great fun.

My quilt High Gear took a trip to Paducah and was photographed for possible inclusion in the AQS Quilt Art Calendar for 2009. They photograph 60 and choose 56 from there for the calendar so I have my fingers crossed. My quilt Heartland Sampler took a trip to Colorado for Harriet Hargrave's Machine Quilting Celebration and hung in the show there.

I got my copy of Cheryl Phillips new book Drunkard's Path Stepping Beyond the other day. It is a great book just loaded with ideas for making Drunkard's Path blocks using Cheryl's Cut A Round tool. Two of my quilts are pictured in the book, Celtic Geese and Circling South. Cheryl and I are talking about publishing a book with my Circling Geese patterns! I am excited and nervous at the same time!

I hope everyone takes advantage of all the quilting opportunities offered in your area. This is a great time of year to start that new project to keep you busy in the upcoming winter months.

Happy Quilting,                                                                                                                                                                                   Kathy

August 2007

I hope everyone is having a wonderful summer. It has been hot here in North Dakota this summer but it just makes more quilting time for me. I want to be in the house with the air-conditioner on sewing instead of out in the heat. I am a wimp and just don't like it when it is too hot.

The Prairie Rose Quilters in Watford City had Jane Spolar from Quilt Poetry come and teach for us in July. We had a wonderful weekend with Jane. I actually got my Floral Meditation wall-hanging finished the week following the class and I just love it. Check out Jane's site at www.quiltpoetry.com

I have entered a few shows this summer and had success. At the Minnesota show I got an honorable mention award for my Heartland Album quilt and a 2nd place award for my Celtic Geese. In Rapid City at the Black Hills Quilt Show I won a first place ribbon on my Circling South quilt. At the North Dakota State fair I won Best of Show and Best Original Design for my quilt High Gear. Garden Sampler won Best of Class.

  High Gear

I am gearing up for fall classes and will need to get my new schedule up soon so look for that in the near future. Hope to see you along the way!

Happy Quilting,

Kathy

June 2007

I just got back from a wonderful trip to South Dakota, spent with old friends. The four of us had not all gotten together for something like this for 17 years! I hope we don't wait 17 more before we do it again! We worked on projects at a cabin in Deadwood. Checked out the shopping at the Quilt Corral in Hill City. We made a side trip to the winery next door and purchased some beverages! Next we went to Rapid City to the Black Hills Quilters quilt show. I won a first place and a fifth place ribbon at the show. We checked out the vendors and three of us ended up buying furniture! These neat chests for storing and displaying quilts. We went to the banquet at the show and Robbi Joy Eklow's trunk show. I love the looks of her quilts. The only down thing about the weekend was that I got a phone call and my husband Robert had to have his appendix out while I was gone. Good thing the nurses were there to take care of him!!

Here is the chest that I bought, full of some of my quilts.
